Navigating the Maze

A Visual Discourse on Racial Profiling

In an attempt to address the complexities of racial profiling, the „Navigating the Maze“ poster employs the symbolism of a labyrinth, highlighting the different challenges faced by people based on their racial background. The labyrinth’s concept, inspired by a scene from the fourth Harry Potter movie, signifies the convoluted and often challenging paths that various racial and ethnic groups have to navigate due to systemic racism.

The poster features a statement in German, Arabic, and English – „The right to leave is a racist privilege,“ embedded within the labyrinthine paths. Each path’s length and complexity are representative of the language and, metaphorically, the race it signifies. The longest path, denoted in Arabic, is squeezed into the maze’s center, depicting the severe obstacles encountered by this group.

The „Navigating the Maze“ poster serves as a powerful visual critique of immigration policies in wealthier countries, highlighting the unfair racial profiling rampant in visa access. The project underscores the necessity for greater awareness and action to combat systemic racial biases, emphasizing the role of design in driving critical conversations around contemporary social issues.

This poster reflects my capabilities to harness design’s power to evoke thought, conversation, and ultimately, change. As an aspiring Art Director, I bring the same commitment to addressing essential social matters through my design and creative process.
